118 years ago, a group of patriotic Swiss united and founded the Gruetli Verein on August 4, 1868. They named themselves the Gruetli Verein of Detroit. Detroit was then just a good-sized village with plenty of forest, wild life and farms. Its members dedicated themselves to assist each other in time of need, both materially and spiritually.
In the 1960's, the present name of the "Detroit Swiss Society" (DSS) was adopted and remains to this day. The DSS meet regularly every 3rd Sunday of each month (with the exception of the months of June, July, and August) at 2 P.M. at the Carpathia Hall in Sterling Heights, Michigan. The activities of the DSS include an Alpine Festival in August, a Fall Dinner-Dance, Jass and film evenings, and a Christmas Party. As an affiliate member of the German-American Cultural Center (GACC), the DSS members endeavor to make worthwhile contributions of cultural and citizenship content to their adopted country, the United States of America.
The DSS welcomes and encourages new applications for membership. Please contact us via
